Bringing the Spring Back into Smyrna
St. Patrick’s Day Festival Made Possible with Help from Lipsey Mountain Spring Water
SMYRNA, Ga. (March 2009) – The 6th Annual Smyrna Market Village St. Patrick's Day Festival held on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 brought a little green and spirit back to the city of Smyrna. Attendees were still able to enjoy the annual “dyeing of the fountain” in spite of the drought.
The fountain, in the center of Smyrna Market Village, has been dry for the last 18 months due to the water bans enacted by the state to help alleviate the drought. Last year event coordinators launched green balloons to kick off the Irish celebration but it simply did not have the same affect. City of Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon, who dyed the fountain green, was delighted to bring back the tradition. The mayor’s office contacted Lipsey Mountain Spring Water to ask if they would donate 6,000 gallons, to get the fountain flowing for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
“The city has been really down lately with the current economic situation and the water bans that stopped the fountain tradition last year, said Kevin Drawe, owner of Atkins Park, who coordinated this year’s festival. “The donation from Lipsey Water really brought the spring and green back into the event and the community. The flowing fountain was symbolic of the rejuvenation in the city.”
The 6th Annual Smyrna Market Village St. Patrick's Day Festival was a huge success. With over 3,000 attendees and a large portion of the proceeds will go to the Mustard Seed Communities. The biodegradable dye added to the fountain has since flushed itself out and the fountain has continued to flow since Tuesday, for the first time in a year and half.
“We were delighted to help with Smyrna’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration. It is a great event for the community and simply would not have been the same without that green fountain,” said president and co-founder, along with his father Buddy Lipsey, of Lipsey Mountain Spring Water. “We have made community service a priority throughout our 20-year history. Being able to give back to the citizens of Georgia – in many different ways - is always a privilege.”
Throughout the day festival attendees thanked Mr. Lipsey for his donation and for “saving the day”.
